Central Jakarta in Indonesia has been rocked this month (January 14th) by a suicide bomber who blew himself up outside a shopping centre, with a second bomb being detonated in the same place just seconds later.
A three-hour gun battle with police ensued in the capital city, with the final stand taking place outside a coffee shop. One of the bombers detonated his explosives outside the Starbucks, while another set them off inside, which wounded several people. As those in the cafe streamed outside, two gunmen opened fire, the Daily Mail reports.
In all, five terrorists and two civilians were killed during the attack, with 17 people wounded as a result. The area around the shopping mall was declared secure by police five hours after the incident took place.
Darren Whiteside, Reuters photographer, said while it was still ongoing: “The Starbucks cafe windows are blown out. I see three dead people on the road. There has been a lull in the shooting but someone is on the roof of the building and police are aiming their guns at him.”
Businesses and homeowners should do all they can to protect themselves from incidents such as this and blast protection window film can do a lot to prevent injuries in the event of a bomb going off, or other similar event.
