The long-awaited UK Clean Growth Plan is in a “holding pattern” following the announcement that there will be a general election on 8th June, climate change minister Nick Hurd has stated.
Speaking to the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) select committee, he said he did not know when the Clean Growth Plan would be published as the country prepares for the election.
“Decisions will have to be taken in quite short order about whether things are going to be announced before or after the election,” he told the committee, according to edie.net
Mr Hurd stressed that the government is committed to developing a low-carbon economy in the UK, and insisted that the work to deliver the plan is “well advanced”, but wouldn’t be drawn on any further details.
Earlier this month, Michael Howard said that when you look at the UK’s economic performance over the past two decades as well as the strides it has made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, it’s clear that tackling climate change doesn’t damage the economy.
In an interview with the Independent, Lord Howard said that data from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit showed then-prime minister John Major had been right to push ahead with initiatives to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.
