The government has been unable to meet its own targets for cutting carbon emissions, waste, water usage and domestic flights, a new report from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has revealed.

However, although the government did fall short in all areas, the reductions that were achieved did succeed in saving the taxpayer £185 million in the last 12 months, the Guardian reports.

A 25 per cent cut in carbon emissions from government buildings and travel was the target for 2014-2015, but 22 per cent was actually achieved. Cuts in emissions predominantly came from improved energy efficiency, accounting for 90 per cent of the cash saved.

Furthermore, the government set out a target of a 20 per cent cut in domestic flights taken by government officials, but a fall of 18 per cent was seen.

Lisa Nandy, shadow energy and climate secretary, was quoted by the news source as saying: “Ministers’ failure to hit almost all of these targets means a bigger bill for taxpayers and more damage to the environment. If the government can’t even cut its own pollution footprint, how can anyone have confidence they will cut Britain’s?”

If you’re keen to be greener at work, consider investing in energy saving window film. This can actually help prevent 93 per cent of heat in the office from escaping through the windows, ideal for use in both residential and commercial buildings. You’ll be able to benefit from reduced energy bills and also help to reduce your carbon footprint. Consumers are increasingly interested in seeing brands be greener so you could even boost your customer base into the bargain.
