The death toll on an attack in Nice, France, has reached 84 after Bastille Day celebrations were interrupted by the devastating incident last week (July 14th).
A driver ploughed his lorry into crowds for 2km (1.24 miles) along the Promenade des Anglais, where people had gathered to celebrate the special occasion in the southern French city.
The culprit, who is thought to have been born in Tunisia, swerved the truck through the mass of spectators, with the intention of hitting as many individuals as possible who had been watching the firework display.
Armed police eventually stopped the 19-tonne lorry by shooting bullets into the windscreen. After firing at the police, he was shot dead. However, he had already mowed down a considerable number of people, killing at least ten children.
ISIS has taken responsibility for the violent terrorist attack, following the slaughter of 140 people in Paris in November.
During this incident, Islamic State took down five sites in the French capital, throwing grenades, firing rifles and detonating suicide bombs to kill and injure as many people as possible.
After last week’s attack, French president Francois Hollande said: “All of France is under the threat of Islamic terrorism”, adding: “We need to do everything we can to fight against [it].”
This act of terror is just another to take place this year, with several bombs already killing hundreds in incidents across Istanbul, Belgium, France and the Middle East.
To limit the damage from explosions, buildings should install blast protection window film. This prevents the glass from shattering, reducing the number of deaths and injuries caused to people nearby.
