A man has been arrested in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, after police suspected illegal chemicals being stored at a property that could be used for making bombs.

Humberside Police were given reports of the substances at the home on Oxford Street and obtained a search warrant as a result.

They arrested a 54-year-old man in connection with the investigation, who is now assisting the force with their enquiries.

Residents in the nearby area were evacuated yesterday (August 4th) as a safety precaution, while an Explosives Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team assess the chemicals.

Superintendent Ed Cook said: “This morning, we will be moving the chemicals which introduces an element of risk, and in order to protect the public and ensure their safety, we have evacuated [residents of Oxford and Cambridge Street] again.”

The EOD and forensic scientists will dispose of the chemicals safely, while a series of controlled explosions may take place in the town as well.

Superintendent Cook urged residents to stay away from the area and keep updated on the situation on the police’s social media and website.

Police are working with several agencies to ensure the speedy and effective resolution of the situation and look after the residents who have been asked to leave their homes.

While news headlines in the last few months have shown an increase of terrorist activities and explosions across the world, this incident highlights the importance of keeping properties and people in the UK safe as well.

For instance, buildings can be protected with bomb blast window film, which prevents glass from shattering in the event of a bomb. This reduces damage to the premises, as well as any injuries caused to those within and outside the property.
