Huge numbers of break-ins have been reported recently, with Littleover in Derby becoming one of the most burgled places in the country and Chislehurst in South-East London, with more than 20 robberies recorded this year.
Earlier this month, four men broke into a home with weapons including a crowbar, screwdriver and sledgehammer. The men, described as stocky with Irish accents, held children hostage and sprayed fake acid on their elderly grandparents in a raid on a 1.4 million home in Chislehurst.
Described as a robbing spree, these are not isolated incidents, nor are they opportunists acting alone but rather organised gangs moving from place to place, leaving behind a trail of destruction and frightened communities in their wake.
