The Challenge

Boland Glazing approached Solartek Films Ltd. with a unique task: refreshing the solar control window film at EDS’s Stockley Park headquarters near Heathrow. The existing film, aged and weathered, was no longer effectively managing heat and glare, creating discomfort for the building’s 1200+ employees. To further complicate matters, EDS, prioritizing workplace safety, required all work to be completed on weekends to avoid disrupting regular operations.

The Solution

Recognizing the unique constraints, Solartek devised a meticulous plan. First, they collaborated with Boland Glazing to install secure external access platforms, ensuring the safety of their technicians while enabling efficient film removal. This meticulous preparation minimized disruption to EDS’s weekend activities.

Next came the heart of the project: applying a new generation of external grade Silver Solar Film to all the building’s rooflights. This high-performance film offered several key advantages:

  • Superior Heat Blockage: Reflecting an impressive 79% of heat transmission during summer months, the film promised a dramatic reduction in the building’s internal temperature. This not only enhanced employee comfort but also potentially lowered air conditioning demands, contributing to energy cost savings.
  • Enhanced Glare Control: The film’s advanced technology effectively diffused incoming sunlight, minimizing glare and harsh reflections on computer screens and work surfaces. This fostered a more pleasant and productive work environment for employees.
  • Sustainable Choice: The film’s heat rejection properties contributed to a significant reduction in the building’s energy consumption, translating to a smaller carbon footprint for EDS. This aligned perfectly with the company’s growing commitment to environmental responsibility.

The Results

Over 10 meticulously planned weekends, Solartek’s team transformed the Stockley Park headquarters. The new Silver Solar Film delivered immediate benefits:

  • Cool Comfort: The building’s internal temperature remained significantly cooler during summer months, creating a noticeably more comfortable and productive work environment for employees. Surveys revealed a marked improvement in employee satisfaction with thermal comfort.
  • Reduced Glare: The diffused sunlight eliminated bothersome glare, improving visual comfort and reducing eye strain for employees working at their computers. This translated to increased productivity and decreased fatigue.
  • Green Gains: Energy consumption data indicated a notable reduction in air conditioning usage during peak summer months, leading to cost savings and a smaller carbon footprint for EDS.

Beyond the Numbers

The success of this project extended beyond quantifiable results. The improved thermal and visual comfort enhanced employee well-being and morale, fostering a more positive and productive work environment. Additionally, the reduced energy consumption and smaller carbon footprint demonstrated EDS’s commitment to environmental sustainability, solidifying its position as a responsible corporate citizen.

Solartek’s expertise and meticulous planning transformed the Stockley Park headquarters into a more comfortable, productive, and sustainable workspace. This case study is a testament to the power of innovative window film solutions in creating healthier, greener buildings that benefit both employees and the environment.
